A Vision for Science at Delabole School

As educators, we are passionate about harnessing the natural curiosity and wonder that goes hand in hand with what it means to 'be a child'.  Little wonder then that our commitment to developing a high quality Science curriculum is driven by our fundamental aim to Inspire children's natural questioning approach through open-ended, exploratory, engaging scientific experiences which are embedded in the real world but enhanced by the virtual world.

Encouraging a reflective mind-set and questioning all aspects of the world around them is a driver for this curriculum area and for that reason, much of our learning is conducted beyond the classroom in our fantastic outdoor learning environment. We believe that scientific investigation and enquiry are a catalyst for leadership opportunities, risk taking and collaborative learning. Fundamentally, Science helps to shape who we are as learners in the broadest sense.

When learning in Science, children are invited to hypothesise, predict, set up experiments and investigations, explore and harness evidence, analyse findings, grapple with the unexpected, draw conclusions and accept that sometimes outcomes are not what they expected. This is the raw edge of learning at its very best and an essential forum for children to grow on the 8 learning dispositions from our Learning Toolkit.

We believe that Science opens up all possibilities through courageous thinking and careful attention to detail, and we aim to drive this curriculum area relentlessly in order to connect our childen to their world.

Aims

The National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
